JANE ROGERS: il ruolo della donna tra passato, presente e futuro

Autrice di diversi romanzi, Jane Rogers scrive anche per la radio (adattamenti radiofonici di grandi classici per la BBC) e le sceneggiature per trasposizioni cinematografiche o televisive delle sue opere (il film Island, ad esempio, o la miniserie Mr Wroe’s Virgins). Come al solito, le sue opere non sono state tradotte in italiano… e neanche i film: nemmeno la serie, nonostante tra gli attori ci siano Jonathan Pryce e Minnie Driver.  

Una delle tematiche più ricorrenti nel suo lavoro è il rapporto genitori-figli: madri che passano le proprie ansie ai figli, padri che ne determinano la vita, così come l’assenza di genitori ed il suo effetto sulla riuscita (o meno) di una persona. Si tratta di una tematica che viene esplorata in vari modi e in in diverse ambientazioni: dal presente, al passato, fino a futuri distopici nelle ultime opere, nei quali le sue eroine vengono messe alla prova in vari modi, proponendo sempre una riflessione sui concetti di  maternità e di scienza.

Dopo una ricerca in rete ho subito ordinato Promised Lands e The Voyage Home, per le tematiche postcoloniali, che mi hanno sempre affascinata. Sarei curiosa di provare a leggere anche una delle opere più recenti, dove prevale il taglio distopico con storie incentrate sul femminile. 

JANE ROGERS: THE ROLE OF WOMEN BETWEEN PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.

She’s a novelist but has also written for the radio (adaptations of great classics for BBC) as well as for cinema and television (adaptations of her own work like, for example, the film Island or the TV series Mr Wroe’s Virgins). As often happens, her works haven’t been translated in Italian… the same is for the film or the series (note that there are actors like  Jonathan Pryce and Minnie Driver in it).

One of the most recurring themes in her work is the parent-child relationship: there are mothers who pass their anxieties to their children; fathers who influence their children’s whole life; as well as the effect of the absence of parents on the life of a person. It’s a theme she has been exploring in different settings: from present to past, to dystopian futures in her more recent books, where the heroines are tested in various ways. In these works she proposes a reflection on the concepts of motherhood and science.

After some search on the net I’ve ordered Promised Lands and The Voyage Home, for the postcolonial matters, which have always fascinated me. I would also like to read one of her most recent books, where dystopian stories focus on female issues.

Stephen Romer e la sua poesia

Poeta e accademico inglese, ha insegnato (e insegna) tra Oxford e Tours (in Francia). Si occupa di tradurre e curare raccolte di poeti francesi. Secondo il critico del British Council la tematica principale attorno alla quale ruotano le sue poesie è il ricordo di amori passati, riportati al presente attraverso particolari, sensazioni, atmosfere… 

Ama citare Proust, e nella sua poesia sono state ravvisate tracce di poeti francesi, ma ciò non fa perdere l’identità profondamente inglese dell’autore. L’amore per la Francia è ovunque: la lingua stessa, la cultura, si insinuano tra le pieghe della sua poesia.

Non ho mai accennato finora ad un sito che apprezzo molto, il Poetry Archive. Si tratta di un portale dedicato alla poesia, che ha un obiettivo particolare: raccogliere le registrazioni di poeti contemporanei. Vi si trovano file audio che ci consentono di scoprire la voce stessa dell’autore ed il suo modo di leggerla e interpretarla… di viverla. E’ un bellissimo modo per entrare in sintonia: la musicalità della poesia, la voce dell’autore, la sua pronuncia, le emozioni che vive e trasmette mentre legge la sua opera… tutto questo è impagabile e andrebbe perso se non ci fosse questo sito. Sono molti gli autori che hanno contribuito con una selezione di podcast. Dal punto di vista didattico ci sono enormi possibilità (da brainstorming con i ragazzi proponendo inizi di poesie -o poesie intere- su cui innestare ragionamenti vari, all’utilizzo per analisi in classe, alle possibilità di avviare progetti lasciando liberi i ragazzi di scegliere le poesie di un autore o di lavorare a paragoni tra autori, creare presentazioni multimediali da proporre ai compagni etc… sono davvero infinite). 

Stephen Romer è presente con cinque poesie nella sezione free, quattro delle quali tratte dalla raccolta che ho scelto di leggere: Set Thy Love in Order. Questo testo contiene, oltre a poesie nuove, una selezione dalle raccolte precedenti, cosa che mi dà l’opportunità di fare un excursus nel percorso poetico dell’autore. Alcune sono incentrate sulla perdita della madre e caratterizzate da sconcerto, abbandono. Si percepisce un senso di funesti presagi e al tempo stesso si avverte un conforto quasi religioso. Ma ci sono anche poesie d’amore, dove la donna è idealizzata e si ricorre a grandi poeti, tra cui i francesi (ovviamente).

English poet and academic, he has been teaching between Oxford and Tours (in France). He has translated and edited some collections of French poets. According to the British Council there’s a main theme in his poems: it’s memories of past loves, lived in the present through details, sensations, atmospheres… He loves quoting Proust and in his poems there are traces of French poets, but this doesn’t mean a loss of his British identity. His love for France is everywhere: its language, its culture, creep into the folds of his poetry.

I have never mentioned a site I really appreciate, the Poetry Archive. It’s a portal on poetry with a special objective: collecting recordings of contemporary poets. You can find audio files with their voices and their ways of reading, interpreting… living their poems. The musicality of each poem, the author’s voice, his pronunciation, the emotions he can convey and feel himself while he’s reading his work… all this is inestimable and it would be lost without that website. Many poets have taken part to the project with a selection of podcasts. It’s also a huge resource for didactic purposes: you can use it for brainstorming with your students -with the beginning of poems- and for discussions or analysis, you can think of a class project making your students choose the author and the poem to present or to compare with others… the possibilities are endless.

There are five poems by Stephen Romer in the Archive, for of them from the collection I have chosen for me: Set hy Love in Order. Besides new poems, it also contains a selection from previous collections, which gives me the opportunity to try an excursus on the development of his poetry.

Some of the poems focus on the loss of his mother: they are characterised by dismay and abandonment. You can feel a sense of doom and of religious comfort at the same time. But there are also love poems, where women are idealised and there are references to great poets, including French authors (of course).

Poesie migranti: è il sottotitolo di questa raccolta, che sembra assegnare alle poesie lo stesso status delle persone di cui trattano. Se il significato principale di migrante è legato allo spostamento, possiamo coglierne anche un significato metaforico: uno spostamento di sensi e di significati.

Questo libretto, breve ma denso (di contenuti, di valori, di bellezza…) è anche illustrato da Quentin Blake. I suoi disegni vengono definiti da Michael Rosen stesso ‘persone che attraversano la storia’... dove il senso del migrante si mescola con quello del pellegrino.

Ancora una volta Michael Rosen esplora le proprie origini, riflette sulla storia della propria famiglia… e ne tira fuori poesia. L’aveva già capito con The Missing: il materiale umano è materiale poetico. Ma non si parla solo di famiglia: si parla anche di amicizia, di guerra, di Storia, di presente e di futuro.

ON THE MOVE: WHEN MIGRATION BECOMES POETRY

Poems about migration: that’s the subtitle of the collection. But we can also say migrant poems, assigning to the poems the same status of the people referred to. If the main meaning of the word migrant is linked to transfer, we can also see a metaphorical reference: a shift of meaning and significance.

This short collection, short but intense (full of contents, meanings, connotations…) is also illustrated by Quentin Blake. According to Rosen his drawings portray ‘people crossing History’... where migrants can be confused with peregrines.

Michael Rosen, once again, deals with his origins, reflects on his family history… and makes poetry with that material. He had already understood that with The Missing:  human material is poetic material. But it’s not only about family: it’s also about friendship, war, History, present and future.

'The Missing': viaggio alla ricerca di sè

Michael Rosen in questo libro ricostruisce parti del suo albero genealogico a partire dai ricordi… alla ricerca di parenti perduti, in alcuni casi dimenticati, perchè il periodo a cui deve risalire è molto, molto difficile: la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Gli ostacoli sono tanti, a partire dalla reticenza dei membri stessi della famiglia, ma anche data la difficoltà di reperire documenti, vista la distruzione di molti di essi nei tentativi di nascondere le terribili azioni perpetrate ai danni di milioni di famiglie ebree. Anche grazie ad Internet il puzzle pian piano prende forma e Rosen prova a scendere fino alle radici di quell’albero. In realtà le notizie trovate, alla fine, sono poche e potevano essere risolte in un breve capitoletto, ma il modo che ha Rosen di raccontarle e la suspence che riesce a creare, tengono il lettore incollato fino all’ultima pagina.

Si tratta di una lettura molto scorrevole e piacevole, intervallata da documenti, fotografie e anche brani poetici. Emerge un filo conduttore, l’importanza di parole come ‘remember’ e ‘share’, entrambe in forte connessione con ‘write’: scrivere è un modo per non dimenticare ed anche per condividere ciò che hai dentro con gli altri che, se si identificano, ripercorrono i tuoi stessi passi.

Come ho accennato, c’è un dialogo tra poesia e narrazione, come se certe emozioni potessero essere comunicate solo attraverso la poesia.

E’ il diario di un viaggio molto particolare, verso le origini e dentro sè stesso.

THE MISSING: A JOURNEY IN SEARCH OF HIMSELF

Michael Rosen tries to reconstruct his family tree starting from memories… in search of lost relatives, some of them forgotten because of the period to go back to: World War Two. There are many obstacles, starting from the resistance of family members, but also because of the difficulty of finding documents -many documents had been destroyed in an attempt to hide the terrible actions against the Jews.

And it is also thanks to Internet that slowly the pieces of the puzzle take place and Rosen tries to go down to the very roots of the tree. Actually, the news are very few and maybe he could solve the riddle in just a short chapter, but the way Rosen tells us all and the suspense he can create keep the reader glued until the last page. 

It’s a smooth and pleasant read, interspersed with documents, photographs and also poems. A common thread is clear, the importance of words like ‘remember’ and ‘share’, both connected with ‘write’: writing is a way to avoid forgetting but also to share what you have inside… and if others identify with your story, they’ll retrace your steps. 

As I mentioned, there is a dialogue between poem and narration, as if certain emotions could be communicated only through poetry.

It’s a very peculiar journey, to one’s origins and inside himself.
